"Overdoor (2) — France, 18th Century, Work Of A Follower Of Christophe Huet."
This decorative panel in shades of blue illustrates a pastoral and gallant scene typical of 18th-century taste. Around a monumental fountain vase decorated with two embracing lovers, several elegant figures in Louis XV costumes rest and converse in a rural setting: a seated couple gives themselves over to tenderness, while other figures point to the gushing fountain. In the foreground, sheep and goats reinforce the bucolic atmosphere. The elongated rectangular format, the monochrome shade technique, and the old mounting on canvas confirm that this is a painting designed to be integrated into woodwork, probably as an over-door or trumeau intended to adorn a wood-paneled living room. With its pastoral theme and refined execution, this work follows in the footsteps of Christophe Huet (1700–1759), a highly sought-after 18th-century painter and decorator, who created numerous sets of chinoiserie and rural scenes for French aristocratic residences. Original oil on canvas, mounted on its old stretcher. Later frame, simple recent beading. Dimensions: Height 80 cm Width 109 cm. This painting was part of a decorative set from a château in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, presented here independently. Very good condition, old restorations.
