Cabinetmaker to the Count of Artois, originally from Germany, his talents were particularly noted in table making. Born in Germany, Conrad MAUTER established himself, at the age of twenty-six, rue du Faubourg Saint Antoine, as a free craftsman. According to registers of the time, several names are attributed to him such as Motet, Motaire, Maulhert, Mautar. He received his mastery in 1777 and became, a few years later, regular supplier to the Count of Artois (future Charles X) to whom he delivered numerous works to the Palace of the Temple, the Pavilion of Bagatelle or the Château de Saint Germain en Laye, luxurious furniture for the Count, more modest for his servants. His clientele included many high-ranking figures of the kingdom. In 1791, Louis XVI ordered several chests of drawers and a wardrobe set consisting of "a bedside table, a business chair and a bidet" for the Château de Saint Cloud, where he planned to receive the Court. His production of tables was intensive under the Directory and the Consulate and his business continued to grow until the end of his life. Upon his death, Nicolas Louis Sandrine bought his workshop. MAUTER produced a large number of Louis XVI style furniture, chests of drawers, small flat or cylinder desks, bookcases, most of them in mahogany wood, with sober and very pure lines, with moldings often decorated with copper rods, but he was especially noted for the manufacture of tables of all kinds, dining tables, gaming tables, writing tables, pedestal tables, bedside tables....always, mainly in mahogany.
