"Cuirassier Officer's Helmet Model 1874"
The cuirassier helmet model 1874, worn by the troops and officers of the French cavalry during the Third Republic, is composed of a bomb made of stamped sheet steel. The headband, made of copper, stamped with a flaming grenade encircled with laurel leaves, is adhered to the bomb. The crest, made of copper, is surmounted by a mask stamped with a head of Medusa in relief, with a covering representing the continuation of the hair of the head of Medusa. The mane, made of horsehair dyed black for the troops. The plume holder, made of stamped copper, fixed obliquely to the bomb is decorated with a blue, white and red plume. The chinstraps are made of copper scales covering the leather. The interior of the headdress is made of leather in used condition but nevertheless complete.
