Alfred Guillard, “Portrait of an Officer,” oil on canvas, signed, 1855
In this portrait from the Second French Empire, an officer wears a navy blue jacket with scarlet piping, silver epaulettes, and an imposing copper regimental badge decorated with an eagle. It is signed “A Guillard” and dated 1855.
This type of portrait was popular during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and many artists produced these lucrative works, whether for private commissions or for the general public. Original gilded frame of good quality.
Alfred Guillard (Caen 1810 - Caen 1880) was a famous portraitist and museologist. He directed the Museum of Fine Arts in Caen and was present at the Paris Salon between 1842 and 1850. This artist was so admired that Edgar Degas owned two of Guillard's paintings.
