Sunrise Landscape By Johannes Son

Pastel on paper depicting a sunrise over a river, probably in Bresse, where the painter Johannes Son (1859-1942) was born. Born in Lyon, he trained at the Bourg-en-Bresse high school with his drawing teacher, but was unable to attend the Lyon School of Fine Arts against his father's wishes. He studied law and returned to Bourg-en-Bresse, where, as a bank employee, he devoted himself to landscape painting from life. He exhibited first at the Lyon Salon from 1884, then in Paris from 1892, where he joined Edmond Yon's studio in 1894 to perfect his skills. He divided his time between Paris, the family home in Bourg-en-Bresse, and artistic trips to France and Italy. The pastel is signed lower left and framed in a wooden frame. Without this frame, the sheet measures 34.5 x 54 cm.
