"Deslyons - Singular And New Treatises Against The Paganism Of King Boit. Widow Saveux, 1670."
DESLYONS (Jean) - Singular and new treatises against the paganism of King Boit. I. Of the young elder of the Catholic Church on Kings' Eve. II. Of the royalty of Saturnalia, postponed and counterfeited by carnal Christians on this Feast. III. Of the superstition of Phoebe, or of the stupidity of Febué. Paris, Chez la veuve de C Savreux, 1670; in-12, 56 ppnch. + 346 pp., contemporary full calf binding, spine decorated with 5 raised bands, marbled edges. First edition. The festivals of Kings' Eve, or of the bean and King Boit, or the eve of Epiphany, where banquets were held to the cries of King Boit, are very ancient and are still present today in the popular form of the galette des rois. In this work, theologian Jean Deslyon sets out on a crusade against these pagan festivals, seeking to prove that, originally, people fasted on the eve of Lent and that these pagan overtones and unbridled customs come to us from the Romans and the Saturnalia. Original edition.
