Japan - Shōwa period (1868–1945)
Wood, lacquer, pigments, and horsehair
H: 19 cm (without beard)
Heavily wrinkled, this old man is smiling, even mocking. His eyes are slightly open and topped with eyebrows made of horsehair tufts.
The nose and mouth are openwork. The prominent chin bears a long, thin horsehair beard—a symbol of wisdom.
The edge of the mask has six holes for straps.
The back is unfinished and bears a signature.
Very good condition.
The “Kyogen” performance was interpreted between the acts of “No” and appears to be a form of entertainment.
