Papua New Guinea, Mid-20th century, circa 1960/1970, Carved wooden hanging hook. This highly stylized piece originates from the IATMUL/SAWOS people, a stylistic area of the Middle Sepik River. Made of wood and mineral dyes, this hanging hook features an ancestral head in the center, evoking the guardian spirit Waken. Thus, men sought favor before a war operation by hanging offerings. This type of hook was not hung but placed in the men's house. This high-quality votive object is presented on a stand specially made to highlight it. Good condition, normal wear.
