Tibetan Silver Gau Amulet Box – Buddhist Spiritual Protection
A finely crafted small Tibetan silver gau (portable amulet box), dating to the 19th – early 20th century. The front is decorated in repoussé with the Wheel of Dharma (Dharmachakra) surrounded by scrolling floral motifs, symbolizing the Buddha’s teaching and the path to enlightenment.
The reverse is engraved with the Tibetan seed syllable “Om” (ཨོཾ), the sacred sound that begins many mantras, most notably Om Mani Padme Hum. This syllable embodies spiritual protection and universal vibration, reinforcing the devotional function of the amulet.
The box opens on side hinges to reveal a hollow interior, traditionally used to hold a prayer scroll, relic, or protective charm. Triple suspension loops indicate it was worn as a pendant or sewn onto clothing during pilgrimage.
A beautiful and portable example of Tibetan spiritual jewelry, uniting symbolism, craftsmanship, and devotion.
