The fourth piece in this series of imperial portraits in oval medallions, this work depicts Sultan Ibrahim I (1615-1648), known as "Ibrahim the Mad," who reigned over the Ottoman Empire from 1640 to 1648. The sovereign is shown in bust form, wearing a large white turban encircled by a blue band, topped with an imposing black and white fan-shaped plume held by a gold medallion. He is dressed in a rich green ceremonial caftan adorned with gold braid and lined with an opulent ermine fur border, revealing orange and gold brocade sleeves. This iconography rigorously adheres to the aesthetic codes established during the reign of Selim III to standardize the official imagery of the rulers of the Sublime Porte, combining the art of local miniature painting with the layout of Western collections of ceremonial engravings. Our work is in line with the art of 19th-century Ottoman imperial portraiture, forming a coherent and inseparable historical whole with the previous portraits of Sultans Bayezid and Selim III.
