Mathieu Béfort; said Béfort Jeune (1813 - 1880), is a descendant of a famous family of Parisian cabinetmakers.
From 1840 to 1880, the workshop prospered on rue Neuve Saint-Gilles, resulting in high-quality furniture made by this cabinetmaker and model maker who was inspired by Boulle furniture and creations from the Louis XIV period.
This piece of furniture is part of the reinterpretation of the Louis XIV style and in particular the creations of Adam Weisweiler. In this piece of furniture at support height, Béfort Jeune takes up the composition of Socrates conversing with Aspasia that Charles Boulle created around 1700 for a large pair of cabinets now kept at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
