Portrait Of A Noblewoman, Daughter Of Louis XIV Pierre Mignard (circle Of) 17th Century

This small oval portrait, taken from a larger composition of which it forms a fragment, depicts a young princess of the French court, probably one of the daughters of the Sun King. The face, rendered with delicacy, shows a fair complexion with rosy cheeks, large light eyes, and finely shaped lips. The hair, styled up and adorned with pearls, reflects the aristocratic fashions of the last third of the 17th century.

The original composition has been cut down, and the canvas mounted on a wooden panel to be inserted into a 19th‑century frame, richly carved with flowers, acanthus leaves, and scrollwork, and gilded with gold leaf. This treatment suggests that the fragment was preserved as a family keepsake or an intimate memento.

The execution recalls the workshops active in the circle of Pierre Mignard or François de Troy, both fashionable painters for female portraits at court.

It is sold with a later carved gilt frame decorated with flowers and acanthus leaves.

In original condition; the varnish has yellowed, and a cleaning would revive the original colours.
