The gold-patterned embroidered bodice, the delicacy of the lace, and the ample red coat thrown over the shoulder are rendered with extreme care, testifying to an experienced hand, trained in the codes of Parisian aristocratic portraiture. But beyond its decorative elegance, the work is distinguished by the strength of its psychological presence.
The model's gaze, both direct and discreet, expresses a nuanced, almost secretive personality between social assurance and contained interiority. The modeling of the face, soft and subtle, reveals a pictorial sensitivity specific to the female portraits of de Largillière and his circle. The painting is presented in its original oval-shaped carved wooden frame, decorated with floral motifs, rocaille shells and stylized foliage.
The old gilding, patinated and partly re-edged, retains its brilliance and highlights the nobility of the subject. Some small old retouches are visible, notably at the neckline, without harming the readability of the whole. Beautiful old painting, French school, oil on oval canvas and carved wooden frame.
By its quality of execution, the richness of its composition and the psychological subtlety of the model, this portrait constitutes a remarkable example of a French Baroque portrait from the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century.
