Giorgio Rossi (1894-1981)
Woman’s Face, terracotta, circa 1920–1930
Tuscan sculptor of the 20th century

Terracotta hand-modeled by the artist, unique piece
Height: 27 cm

Giorgio Rossi belongs to that generation of Tuscan sculptors who worked between the two World Wars. Trained in Florence under Antonio Bortone, he began his career with monuments and works influenced by the Liberty style and commemorative sculpture. After the First World War, he moved toward a poetic realism typical of the 20th century, combining careful observation of reality with an idealization of form. This evolution led him to a synthesis close to Art Deco—though without excessive stylization—in which the real is balanced with an intimate and measured vision.

Terracotta, a material Rossi particularly favored, is part of the long Tuscan tradition that stretches from the Etruscans to the Renaissance, becoming for him a privileged medium to convey human presence and truth. The female face presented here is a fine example: a restrained modeling, balanced volumes, a gently inclined gaze, and a surface that retains its warm original patina.

Provenance: directly from the artist’s family, preserved in the collection since its creation. The work is documented in catalogues dedicated to Giorgio Rossi.

Condition: excellent.

Biography
Born in San Piero a Sieve in 1894, Giorgio Rossi studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence with Antonio Bortone.
His early works reflect the commemorative and Liberty influences of the period, but by the 1920s he had developed a personal language based on a balance between tradition and modernity, with the human figure at the core of his research. He took part in important national exhibitions, including two editions of the Venice Biennale, where his works were praised for their technical quality and modern interpretation of tradition.
For over thirty years, he taught at the Artistic and Industrial School of Volterra, specialized in alabaster, training generations of artists. Until his death in Florence in 1981, he pursued a constant exploration of form, light, and the inner dimension of his subjects.
