"Robert Wogensky's "plein Feu" Tapestry - Aubusson"
TAPESTRY BY ROBERT WOGENSKY (1919-2019)
Full Fire Numbered 2/6
Hand-signed.

French artist of Polish origin.
His family settled in France, where he studied art in the studio of René Jaudon, then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

The artist was drafted into the army in 1939. Released in 1940, he stayed in Lyon where he discovered the world of theater and puppetry before clandestinely traveling to Paris. It was there that he met Jean Lurçat.
Together, they temporarily settled in the Lot region to work on numerous tapestry cartoons. It was also Jean Lurçat who introduced Robert Wognesky to Denis Majorel. The renowned tapestry enthusiast and gallery owner purchased his first box in 1945.
From then on, the artist was a member of the APCT (Association of Tapestry Panel Painters). Robert Wognesky traveled to Aubusson in 1947, where he met the greatest masters of the weaving workshop: François Tabard, Suzanne Goubely, Raymond Picaud, and Camille Legoueix. He established a special relationship with the latter, who would later create numerous tapestries based on the artist's cartoons.
From 1956 to 1985, Robert Wogensky taught at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris. During this period, he created numerous works: paintings, tapestries, mosaics, and frescoes.

Robert Wogensky's work has been exhibited in several galleries in France and abroad. He also participated in numerous exhibitions and received public commissions (Ministry of Heritage, Ministry of National Education, Senate, etc.). In 1964, he was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
Robert Wogensky also collaborated with architect Jean Prové from 1973 to 1976, organizing the Circle of Architectural Studies.

Robert Wogensky is today considered one of the fathers of the modern tapestry revival.

He focuses on the themes of Water, Fire, and Living Nature.
