- Received instruction from Frans Decker and Tako Jelgersma.
- Member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem.
- Professor and Director of the Haarlem Academy of Drawing of which he was one of the founding members.
- Worked almost exclusively in watercolor and is known for his copies of Old Masters from the 17th century, bookplates, portraits and pastoral landscapes.
