LARGE SURREALIST OIL ON CANVAS BY THE PAINTER GIANFRANCO RONTANI. size 118 x 97 cm -
The image shows a surrealist painting by Gianfranco Rontani.
Surrealism is an artistic movement that aims to express the subconscious and dreams, freeing creativity from rational control.
The work features everyday objects in unexpected, dreamlike combinations, such as a stylized musical instrument, a drum, flowers, and floating spheres.
These elements are arranged in an abstract landscape with a blue-streaked sky and a dark ground, creating a mysterious and symbolic atmosphere.
The use of clear, yet seemingly unrelated, images is a distinctive feature of the surrealist style.
(Lucca 1926) First solo exhibition inaugurated in Prato in 1962 at the Falsetti art gallery, followed by numerous others in the main Italian and foreign cities, including: Florence, Rome, Bologna, Pisa, Chicago in 1965, Verona, Milan (several times), Genoa, Trento, Bolzano, Mantua, Bergamo, Catania, Bari, Parma, Rovigo, Lugano in 1976, Grosseto, Prato, Ferrara, Sesto San Giovanni, Viareggio, Pistoia, La Spezia, Lucca, Monaco in 1995, Empoli, Udine etc. The most important exhibition, which attracted thousands of visitors, was that of Dante Alighieri's 'Inferno', represented for the first time in oil on canvas in a series of 34 paintings (each measuring 2.00 x 1.60 m) and exhibited by the Municipality of Lucca in the monumental church of San Cristoforo from May 1 to October 5, 1980. It is the largest oil on canvas work painted in Europe in this century, with its canvases totaling 108 square meters. The same exhibition was presented in 1982 in Pontedera; in 1984 in Latisana and Udine; in 1986 in Milan in the cloisters of the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology, presented by Francesco Ogliari. On this occasion, Maestro Rontani was awarded the Silver Ambrogino of the Municipality of Milan; in 1996 in Baveno; and in 1998 in Lugano. In consideration of the particular merits of his activity in favor of culture and art, in 1988 he was awarded, on the proposal of the President of the Council of Ministers, the honor of Knight of the Republic. Other noteworthy works include a large canvas placed on the altar of the church of San Lazzaro in San Concordio in Lucca, representing the return to life of the Saint, and a painting entitled 'Let the little children come to me' (4 x 3 m), donated to Pope John Paul II on the occasion of his pastoral visit to Lucca, which took place in September 1989. Finally, noteworthy is the cycle of works that occupied him for two years, collected under the title 'Memorie di Carnevale', presented in Viareggio (1992) at the Palazzo dei Congressi 'Principe di Piemonte', for the European Carnival of the FECC, European Carnival City Foundation (curated by the Viareggio Carnival Foundation). These are the significant traces of the long artistic journey of Gianfranco Rontani, a painter who masterfully moves from the sacred to the profane. Renowned cultural figures have affirmed his place among the greats of contemporary Italian painting, placing him among the unfinished pages of our country's artistic history. Authoritative journalists, painters, and art critics have written about him in newspapers, catalogs, and monographs. Throughout his long artistic career, he has received numerous coveted prizes and awards. His works are exhibited in public and private collections in Italy and abroad, and are permanently on display at the Portofino Park Museum.
