Multiple reliquary containing a fragment of the True Cross and relics of saints – 19th century – Italy

Authentic oval reliquary in silver metal with hand-shaped mount, decorated with gadroons and large embossed acanthus leaves.

Description

This reliquary contains a rich collection of relics of saints, all perfectly identified by handwritten cartouches on parchment, arranged around a fragment of the True Cross (Ex ligno Crucis DNJC), central and highlighted in a golden cross with trefoils.
The relics are presented on a dark red silk background, enhanced with high-quality golden paperolles.

S. Petri Apost. (Saint Peter, Apostle)
S. Pauli Ap. (Saint Paul, Apostle)
S. Joseph Spos. VM (Saint Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary)
S. Laur. M. (Saint Lawrence, martyr)
S. Ann. MV (Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin)
S. Cathar. VM (Saint Catherine, virgin and martyr)
S. Teresiae V. (Saint Teresa, probably Teresa of Avila)
S. Franc. Ro. Vid. (Saint Frances of Rome, widow)m
S. Dominici (Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominicans)
By. Dom. Laur. (probably a priest Laurent – wording uncertain, perhaps Dom Laurent, Benedictine or prelate)

The relics are held by gilded paper nets, mounted in the old style, and sealed with red silk threads leading to a red wax ecclesiastical seal still perfectly intact, guaranteeing authenticity and unopenedness.

Probable origin: Italy or Papal States
Date: mid/second half of the 19th century (circa 1850–1880)
Dimensions: 7 x 6.5 cm

Condition:

Excellent state of preservation, original glass, no losses, intact decoration, unbroken canonical seal.

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as an object of sacred art.
The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included free of charge for their historical and cultural value.
