A finely carved Edo-period ivory netsuke depicting a cheerful shōjō, the mythical sake-loving spirit from Japanese folklore, shown kneeling beside a large sake jar. The figure is characterized by rounded features, a broad smile, and a bowl delicately held in one hand, gazing appreciatively at the jar. The details in the hair and robe folds are crisply incised, with rich patination accentuating the contours of the carving. The base and back reveal large himotoshi typical of 18th-century netsuke. The figure’s right hand may show signs of wear or possible shortening, though this does not detract from the charm or integrity of the piece. An excellent early example of netsuke craftsmanship reflecting both humor and symbolic association with festivity and intoxication.
