The mythological scene features a rare and unique depiction of Silenus, a woodland god associated with the Dionysian and Bacchic cults, who with exuberant hilarity crushes a grape stalk, pouring out the juice to make the infants drink and become intoxicated, triggering the metamorphosis of the three children into satyrs, holding out a sort of patera to drink from it. Indeed, one is undergoing the transformation, and his legs take on the shape of a goat. Under a vine, a woman identified as Venus witnesses the scene and reacts with disgust.
The painting is in excellent condition and on its original canvas. It has recently been cleaned, revealing the colors and interesting, dense, stringy brushstrokes that recall Carpioni's work. The same is true for the composition of the figures and the facial features of the characters depicted.
The beautiful carved frame, in green lacquer and gold leaf, dates back to the early 20th century.
The dimensions are 55cm x 72cm high - External frame 77cm x 87cm.
