Gothic Silver Reliquary With Cloisonné Enamels
Chased and embossed silver, polychrome enamels, glass
Height: 75 cm
Origin: Central Europe (likely German or Austrian region), second half of the 19th century
A remarkable neo-Gothic silver reliquary, featuring a six-lobed base richly adorned with embossed grapevine and foliate motifs. Four circular cloisonné enamel medallions depict the Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, each bearing their traditional attributes and Latin name inscriptions.
The central shaft is structured in a vertical Gothic scheme with canopied niches, pointed arches, pinnacles, and engaged columns. These architectural elements house finely modelled high-relief busts of saints or Doctors of the Church, crafted with notable detail and plasticity.
The central reliquary case, glazed on all four sides, is surmounted by a tall, openwork pyramidal spire in Gothic style, embellished with crockets, finials, and flame-like tracery. Two silver female figures in the round — likely saints or theological allegories — flank the shrine on either side.
This work is an outstanding example of 19th-century Central European religious silverwork, rooted in medieval Germanic art and produced within the Gothic Revival movement for devotional or liturgical purposes.
