Cartier Tourmaline Clasp Necklace / Yellow Gold, Multi-row Choker Of Tahitian Keshi Pearls

Necklace with a clasp signed Cartier, in 750/°° yellow gold (18 KT, eagle's head hallmark), adorned with colored stones, here pink and green tourmalines, and brilliant-cut diamonds. This vintage clasp is duly signed, and numbered...the numbering is nevertheless partly erased by the wear of the jewel, which does not allow to make the link with an inventory number referenced at Cartier. Among the diamonds which punctuate the circumference, one of them serves as a "thumb piece" activating the ratchet clasp; a flap placed below the clasp guarantees the security of the closure. The design of this clasp makes the system completely invisible once closed, which allows it to be worn as a visible ornament, placed as desired. This clasp is mounted on several rows of pearls called “keshis” from Tahiti, which are worn in a twist, more or less tight… thus, the necklace can be worn as a choker of 43 cm in a tight twist, and 49 cm if the rows are worn loose and dissociated. The colors of these pearls are complementary and highlighted by the tourmalines: these pearls with a bright orient present, due to their thick layer of mother-of-pearl, varied colors, but essentially pink and green, like the pearls of Tahiti…. These particular pearls result from the secretion of mother-of-pearl by the oyster, not around a round nucleus, but from a small piece of epithelium belonging to the pearl itself…. as a result, these pearls are made almost entirely of mother-of-pearl, which gives them an extraordinary orient. This elaboration therefore also explains their baroque shape as well as their dimension, and gives them a unique and precious character. They are therefore, by their particular orient, the counterpart of the fine pearls, which we find on antique jewelry. Their large number on this necklace makes it, just like its clasp signed Cartier, a sought-after jewel.
