Jean Dreyfus-Stern was born Jean Maurice Dreyfus in the 10th arrondissement of Paris on December 20, 1890. Drawn to painting at an early age, Jean Dreyfus-Stern studied under Charles-François-Prosper Guérin (painting) and Bernard Naudin (engraving) before attending the Académie Colarossi and the studios of Maurice Denis and Antoine Bourdelle. A member of the Salon d'Automne since 1920 and the Salon des Indépendants since 1923, he also exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries from 1924 and in Copenhagen, The Hague, Madrid, and Tokyo (1928). The son of a banker, living comfortably off his income, Jean Dreyfus-Stern was not financially compelled to sell his paintings, nor was he concerned with achieving fame. This "grand bourgeois" had no need to exhibit (even though, after his participation in the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in 1925, his works, then widely and laudably noted by art critics, were presented in Madrid, Copenhagen, The Hague, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro), confirms Gérald Schurr.
