Object description :

"Charles Levier – Large Bouquet – Oil On Canvas - Signed"
Oil on canvas depicting a large bouquet on a corner of a table, in front of a window, in a modernist style.

The work is done in a range of reds, blues, browns. This colorful sobriety responds to the exuberance of the forms in the plant. The leaves and flowers are oversized and fill the space of the painting. Each element is as if sketched before being painted, the light touch brings beautiful nuances.
The whole exudes optimism and joie de vivre, in a very 60's atmosphere.

The work is signed lower left. It is in very good condition. It is offered in a sober modern black frame, also in very good condition.

The artist
Charles Levier (1920–2003) is a French-American painter known for his elegant and colorful compositions, mixing modernity and tradition.
Born in Corsica, France, to a French father and an American mother, he developed an artistic sensibility very early on nourished by European and American cultures. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, but his career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the French Resistance.
After the war, Levier moved between France and the United States. He exhibited in New York in 1949 and achieved increasing success thanks to his distinctive style, somewhere between figuration and modernism. He became particularly known for his portraits of women, stylized still lifes, and cityscapes, painted in a warm and refined palette.
His work reflects a moderate Cubist influence, combined with a strong decorative sense and a touch of melancholy.

Represented by numerous galleries in the United States, notably in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and New York, Levier enjoys a significant private clientele (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Baron de Rotschild, etc.).
His works are now included in several American public collections and museums, including the Seattle Art Museum and the New Orleans Museum of Art. He died in 2003, leaving behind an elegant body of work at the crossroads of worlds.
