"Antique Watercolor Depicting Segesta"
This watercolor on paper dates back to the first half of the 19th century and is distinguished by its refined brush technique, which sensitively captures the luminous atmosphere and morphology of the Sicilian landscape.
In the foreground, a dirt road winds through rocky hills, populated by Mediterranean vegetation such as agaves and shrubs. In the background, the unmistakable Doric temple of Segesta stands out, isolated among the surrounding hills.
At the bottom right, the inscription "Segesta Sicily"
This work is a typical example of the Grand Tour, a period in which European artists and travelers visited Italy in search of classical inspiration. Interest in Sicily's archaeological and monumental landscapes was particularly keen among English and German painters.
The frame is made of gilded wood.
