"Round Carved Wooden Box Decorated With Portraits Of Liberal Deputies - 19th Century"
Circular box carved in bas-relief, decorated on its lid with medallion portraits of four emblematic figures of French parliamentary liberalism: Casimir Perier, General Foy, Benjamin Constant and Émile de Girardin. The effigies are arranged in a cross around an open book symbolizing the law or the Constitutional Charter. Period first half of the 19th century, circa 1835 - 1840. Minor losses and wear from use, warped and cracked lid. Dimensions: diameter 8.5 cm - height 2.2 cm approximately. This object of political memory as well as collection pays tribute to the action of these men in the defense of public freedoms and parliamentarism, particularly in the face of the authoritarian tendencies of the Restoration. It testifies to the adherence of a part of civil society to the liberal ideals of the French 19th century.
