Imposing ritual mask made of carved wood and natural pigments, from the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. This tribal work is distinguished by its powerful expression, reinforced by the protrusive volumes of the eyes and mouth, as well as by the elegance of its graphic patterns, painted using mineral and organic pigments (clay, charcoal, limestone). Masks of this type were used within secret societies during initiation rituals, funeral ceremonies or community festivals. They embodied tutelary spirits, playing a protective role for the clan.
