Oil On Canvas Attributed To Andries Both – 17th Century

Artist: Andries Both
Burlesque genre scene attributed to the Dutch painter Andries Both (active around 1610–1650), one of the representatives of the Caravaggio school of Utrecht. The work depicts two popular figures in a comical pose: an old woman seems to be treating or examining the posterior of a man leaning on a cane. The expressive treatment of the faces and the humorous tone are characteristic of Andries Both's style, influenced by Italian street scenes and grotesque figures. Oil on canvas mounted on a stretcher, presented in an antique gilt-leaf frame (visible wear). Dimensions: – Frame: 36 x 29 cm – Canvas: 26 x 20 cm Painting of interest to lovers of 17th-century Nordic genre scenes.
