Biography of AJ Zwart Adrianus Johannes Zwart (Rijswijk 1903 – 1981 Laren) made his first painting in 1915. The previous year, he had won a box of painting materials and lessons from Otto Kriens. At home, Arie was expected to work in his father's bakery, and later in a grocery store. A compromise was reached: Arie helped out at the auction from 4 a.m., and then was able to attend classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague during the day. There, he met the art dealer Koch, who recognized his talent and managed to sell his works well. Arie also became acquainted with other artists such as Louis Soonius, Wim Soer, and Louis Meijs. Finally, he attended two years of classes at the Academy of Fine Arts, just after the heyday of the Hague School. His style would later become freer and more impressionistic. From 1920 onwards, he began to travel. First by bicycle, then by steamer to Rhenen. He lived first in a caravan, then on a barge with his wife and their three children, along the Meuse and IJssel rivers. Later, he settled in Woerden. He also traveled to Spain, Portugal, and the south of France. Wherever he went, he painted and drew. After his marriage in 1926, he lived entirely as an artist. He was a very productive and versatile painter. He painted many Dutch landscapes and still lifes. Although his early works have a darker tone, his later work is often light and bright. His sunny paintings are particularly magnificent. "
The condition of the painting is good. Some cracks are visible. The frame is original, but shows some damage."
