School of PIETER CANDID (Bruges, 1548-Munich, 1628). After an engraving by Jan Sadeler (Flanders, 1548-1628), whose composition and gestures of the figures can be found.
Our oil on copper is in good condition in a carved and gilded wooden frame. The line is rigorous and firm. The Mannerist work is similar to the painting of Pieter Candid, born in Flanders and active in Italy and Bavaria.
First mentioned in 1576, he was called to the ducal court of Munich in 1586. He was first court painter to Duke William V of Bavaria, then to Maximilian I of Bavaria. Between 1600 and 1628, he was the most important artist in Munich. A versatile artist, he was a painter, but also a creator of tapestries, prints, and sculptures. He is credited with introducing Italian fresco painting to Bavaria. The iconography he developed would have an influence until the 18th century.
