"Bartholomeo Schedone (1578-1615), Two Putti Seated Near A Basket Of Fruits."
Lined and parqueted panel. In very good condition, some restorations mainly affecting the backgrounds. Size 51 cm x 39.5 cm. Gilded wooden frame with inverted profile. Born in Modena in 1578, Bartholomeo Schedoni trained with the great masters of the Emilia region. He entered the service of the Duke of Modena, in his native city, to work in his palace. Between 1606 and 1607, inspired by Niccolo dell Abate, he created the frescoes of the council chamber, in the town palace of the same city. At the end of his life, he retired to Parma between 1610 and 1612, where he was influenced by the style of the painter Giovanni Lanfranco, as we see in our work. His career ended tragically in 1615, the year he committed suicide. This lost composition by Shedone was known from a copy given to Sisto Badalocchio (Parma, Galleria Nazionale). The attitude of the angel taking fruit echoes another work by Schedoni, Cupid, preserved in Naples at the Capodimonte Museum. Our work is also related to the “Cupid in a Landscape”, preserved at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
