"Belt Box In Rosewood And Boxwood Marquetry – Charles X Period, "
Refined rectangular box in Rio rosewood, decorated with elegant boxwood marquetry motifs: on the top, a fretwork fillet surrounded by multiple fillets connected on a Greek principle framing stylized palmettes in the corners, on the front, an Etruscan vase motif accompanied by foliage and flower scrolls. The sides are decorated with a simple linear frame. In the center of the lid, a rare and precious inscription: "CEINTURES", finely marquetry in capital letters, underlines the original function of this box. This type of box is often identified in literature as a glove box, a typical accessory of bourgeois toiletry during the Restoration. However, this version marked "CEINTURES" testifies to a more specific and much less common use, offering a rare variant of this everyday object, intended to organize personal effects with elegance. The interior, in moiré lemon tree, brings a touch of warm light and contrasts delicately with the dark veneer. The box opens easily, the lock is original but does not work, there is an old key with it. A piece that is at once decorative, precious and instructive, representative of the taste of the Charles X era for exotic woods, contrasts of tone and refined sobriety. French work, circa 1825–1830. Very well preserved, this box has been cleaned and the varnish redone, offering a most flattering visual. Dimensions: Width: 26 cm Depth: 10 cm Height: 8 cm
