Antique Statuette Of The Seated Buddha – Bronze, Shan School, Burma, 18th–19th Century

Statuette of Shakyamuni Buddha seated in a meditation posture (padmāsana), his back straight, his face peaceful and slightly inclined downward. His half-closed eyes, his gaze directed towards the ground, express a state of inner concentration. His right hand touches the earth in the symbolic gesture of the bhūmisparśa mudrā (“taking the earth as witness”), while his left hand rests on his crossed legs, palm facing the sky, in the dhyāna mudrā of meditation. He is dressed in a monastic robe (sanghāti), with a sculpted panel falling down the back, marked by a clean incision. His hairstyle is smooth, stylized, and topped with a well-formed ushnisha. The elongated ears, detached from the skull, recall the distinctive signs of the Buddha. The tripartite base has regular beaded moldings. The underside is unsealed, revealing a cast iron core, evidence of an ancient lost-wax process.
