Melody By Albert-ernest Carrier-belleuse (1824–1887)

Exceptional allegorical bronze sculpture entitled Mélodie, signed by the renowned French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. The work depicts a graceful muse holding a lyre—a symbol of musical inspiration—frozen in a fluid, almost choreographic posture. The modeling of the draperies, the anatomical finesse, and the expressiveness of the gesture reflect the academic refinement of late 19th-century French sculpture. The piece is enhanced by a striking two-tone patina: a deep brown for the clothing and instrument, contrasting with a subtle olive green hue for the skin. This contrast accentuates the sculptural depth and gives the whole a theatrical and vibrant presence. The work is signed A. Carrier-Belleuse – Hors Concours, n° 260, which attests to the artist’s privileged status at the Paris Salon, where he was exempt from competitions in recognition of his artistic merit. About the artist: Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887) was one of the major figures of 19th-century French sculpture. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts and a former student of David d'Angers, he also worked in England with the Minton factory before opening a very successful workshop in Paris. His style combines classical elegance and decorative richness, often inspired by mythological and sensual themes. He was appointed director of the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres and promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor in 1867. His work achieved international recognition through numerous public commissions and exhibitions. In particular, Auguste Rodin began his career in Carrier-Belleuse's studio. His works are included in major museum collections, including the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
