Jean Capdeville (1917–2011)Jean Capdeville is a Catalan painter. After a youth marked by the war, he devoted himself fully to painting in the 1950s. Initially influenced by the major trends of lyrical abstraction, his work quickly moved towards an interior and meditative approach, where matter, silence and light became the true subjects of the painting. Working mainly in Céret, at the foot of the Pyrenees, Jean Capdeville developed a unique pictorial language: vibrant surfaces, muted tones, restrained gestures, everything in his work tends towards a form of spiritual purification. His work is often associated with a painting of silence, a “poetry of the invisible” praised by many contemporary poets and writers. During the 1960s and 1970s, Capdeville was regularly exhibited in major salons and biennials, and he actively collaborated with the Maeght printing workshop (ARTE) in Paris. Several of his engravings, lithographs and aquatints were published by Maeght Éditeur, alongside the works of Braque, Tàpies or Chillida. This relationship marked an important recognition in the contemporary art world of the time.
