French Shaving Mirror With Candle Holder (19th Century)
This French mahogany shaving mirror dates from the second half of the 19th century and was adorned with decorative mother-of-pearl elements. These mirrors were not only used for shaving, but also reflected candlelight, which helped to further illuminate the room in which they were located. The mirror glass has been treated with a silver nitrate solution, a technique used from 1840 to achieve a better reflection of the glass.Condition: The mirror glass shows typical discoloration due to the oxidation of the silver nitrate that was applied to the back of the glass to achieve a better reflection. Otherwise, this object is in good condition
