Lovely oil on canvas signed Alfred Smith depicting an undergrowth in autumnal hues, bathed in golden light. The reddened foliage, deep ochres and touches of brown warm the composition and poetically convey the tranquility of the season, probably inspired by the wooded landscapes of the Gironde or Dordogne. A major painter of the Bordeaux School, Alfred Smith (1854–1932) distinguished himself as a great landscape artist of the late 19th century. Close to the Impressionist circles, he exhibited at the Parisian Salons from the 1880s. His work is characterized by a sensitive approach to nature, oscillating between lyrical realism and pictorial modernity. Good condition, slight alteration at the bottom right.
