Provenance: private european collection
In the tradition of the half-length portraits produced in Denner’s workshop, this painting evokes the characteristic verism of his circle. The realism of the work is highlighted by the fine rendering of skin texture, wrinkles, and the fur's texture.
Balthasar Denner began his career as a miniaturist, joined the Berlin Academy in 1707, and became renowned for his portraits of elderly heads, which were highly sought after in European courts.
Note: Inscription on the reverse reads “Denner by J Guttmann”
