Depicting an episode from the Passion of Christ, this work evokes the flagellation of Christ. Jesus of Nazareth is standing, crowned with thorns and clothed, both hands fettered by a rope.
Ecce homo is the expression used by Pontius Pilate in the Vulgate translation of the Gospel of John (19:5) when he presents Jesus to the crowd, beaten and crowned with thorns, before the Crucifixion.
