Object description :

"Louis XVI Half-moon Chest Of Drawers Stamped By Léonard Boudin And Vassou"

Beautiful Louis XVI half-moon shaped chest of drawers in European lacquer.

It opens on the front with two drawers without crosspieces in black European lacquer with a motif of floral and leafy bouquets in ochre tones.

It has two side doors on either side with the same decoration revealing a space for a shelf.

The uprights with rectangular geometric patterns are decorated with gilt bronze falls decorated with capitals and flowered palmettes.

It rests on four tapered legs with rings and gilt bronze sabots, in the round, chiseled and decorated with ribbon tori.

Gilt bronze fittings for the lock entries decorated with medallions topped with leafy garlands and the pulls in pearl garlands. White veined marble top.

Louis XVI period work stamped on the top Vassou and JME (for Jean-Baptiste Vassou, master on January 28, 1767), and on the back L. Boudin for Léonard Boudin, one of the very great cabinetmakers of the 18th century, received master on March 4, 1761.

Léonard Boudin (1735-1807) is one of the most talented French cabinetmakers of the second half of the 18th century. Received master in 1761, he distinguished himself by the ingenuity of his achievements. His works reveal a constant search for balance between aesthetics and mechanical functionality, rare at that time.

He carried out orders for big names, such as his office table for Gilles Joubert (furniture supplier to the royal furniture store) at the request of the Count of Provence at the Chateau de Compiègne and also his chest of drawers for the Count of Fontainebleau in 1771.

Many large pieces by this cabinetmaker are today in the collections of the Louvre, the Carnavalet Museum or the Château de Versailles. It is also represented internationally. His furniture can be found at the Cleveland Museum of Art or at the Kunts Husgeradskam in Stockholm and in many other places.
