Large white marble statuary sculpture of a young woman by Alfred Jean Foretay (1861-1944).
It is an allegory of Elegy, which is a genre within lyric poetry.
Our sculpture is totally in the Art Nouveau spirit with a very aerial and free movement.
The young woman is represented in 3/4, her hair natural, just a headband barely holding it back.
She seems to be declaiming a poem.
Very decorative work.
Two small locks of hair formerly glued back on the left side in front, some scratches and slight abrasions.
Art Nouveau period, around 1900.
Approximate weight in 20 and 25 kg.

Alfred Jean Foretay (1861-1944), Switzerland who He moved to Paris at the age of 16, where he studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Falguière. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, receiving an honorable mention in 1891 and a gold medal in 1904.
