Half-moon-shaped cosmetic or ointment box, Kuba, Democratic Republic of Congo. Carved wood with a dark brown patina mixed with reddish pigments. It was intended to store the red powder used as cosmetics; its surface is decorated with cosmogonic motifs and a mask figure that testifies to the social status of its owner.
