Ancient Image Of The Seated Buddha, Myanmar
Antique image of the seated Buddha in Bhumisparsha mudra, Myanmar, early Konbaung period (1752-1885), sometimes called the Alaungpaya dynasty. The historical Buddha Shakyamuni sits in padmasana on a double throne adorned with stylized lotus petals. The Awakened One calls upon the earth to bear witness to his enlightenment and thus his victory over Mara. The base beneath the throne, slightly darker and about 1 cm high, is a 20th-century restoration. Its purpose was likely to stabilize the sculpture. Provenance: Former Claude de Marteau Collection.
