Oshidori 鴛鴦 Mandarin Ducks
Pair of lacquered Mandarin Ducks wood sculptures, Japan, Taishō period (1912-1926)
The myth of mandarin ducks is that they mate for life. In Japanese and Chinese cultures, they symbolize marital happiness, fidelity, and affection.
They have inspired sculptures, paintings, poetry, prose, and even Noh and Kabuki theater plays. They are often given, in various forms, as wedding gifts to newlyweds.
Good condition, except for a small chip on the hen’s beak.
