"Georgian Guria Kindjal"
A 19th-century Gurian kindjal dagger from western Georgia, representing the distinctive regional style of the Black Sea region of the Caucasus. This example features a twisted-core blade, a forging method that gives it great strength, and a subtly patterned surface. A central double fuller adorned with small inlaid gold details reflects the decorative traditions of 19th-century regional craftsmanship. The hilt, in typical Gurian form, is made of dark, iron-shod horn, with gilt koftgari bosses and a pronounced lobed pommel. The scabbard leather has been carefully restored using traditional materials and methods, while the rest of the example remains in its original condition.
The scabbard is adorned with a central iron ring decorated in koftgari with a floral motif. Kindjal like this were carried both as weapons and as symbols of identity throughout the Caucasus.
