Jules CLAMAGIRAND's (1870-1937) career took place mainly in the Nord department, after training as a sculptor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under François Truphème and Abel Poulin. Under the latter's direction, he participated in the creation of the lavish decorations for the Alexandre III Bridge, inaugurated during the 1900 World's Fair. At the same time, he found employment with the plastering and sculpting firm of Louis Allard fils in Roubaix. There, he perfected his craftsmanship on various public and private projects, including the decoration of the pavilions at the International Exhibition of Textile Industries in Tourcoing in 1906, the village hall of Roubaix Town Hall, the Tourcoing Chamber of Commerce, and the creation of the reliefs adorning the "Maison du Broutteux" for the famous poet-songwriter Jules Watteuuw, and the Indian and Moorish decorations for the sumptuous residence of the whimsical Charles Vaissier at Blanc Seau (a castle destroyed in 1925). He settled permanently in Tourcoing in 1911 where he worked as a professor of sculpture and modeling at the École des Beaux-arts. Clamagirand deployed his talents as an ornamental sculptor locally and his style evolved over the years: while he knew how to practice classicism and Renaissance Gothic (as for the bas-relief of the altarpiece of a chapel in the church of Saint-Christophe in Tourcoing), he often adopted the lines of the Art Deco movement after the Great War. This is evidenced by the ornamentation of the war memorials in the cemeteries of Tourcoing and Blanc Seau, the chapel of the Vœu in Tourcoing, the church of Sainte-Thérèse-de-l’Enfant-Jésus in Wattrelos or that of the Sacré-Cœur in Roubaix. His most modern compositions are reserved for decorations executed for individual houses, funerary monuments (that of Georges Dron, mayor of Tourcoing, for example), or commemorative monuments, as well as the pieces he presented at exhibitions at the Van Oost gallery in Tourcoing in the 1920s and 1930s and, in all likelihood, the models he used to train his students. An officer of the Palmes académiques and a member of the French Social Party, Jules Clamagirand died at his home in Tourcoing on April 21, 1927, and was buried in Paris, at the Montparnasse cemetery.
