"Jean Margerit (1891-1974) Landscape Of Corrèze. Limousin, Brother Of Robert, Lobel Riche, Gasperi"
RARE oil on canvas by Jean Margerit depicting a landscape of Corrèze around 1940/1950, signed lower right + located on the back. Size of the canvas alone without frame 38x55cm and 42x59cm including frame. This is indeed a rare canvas by Jean Margerit of post-impressionist style depicting a landscape of Corrèze that the painter treats in a rich paste and a lively and colorful palette, faithful to his way of painting. Jean MARGERIT (Louis, Baptiste; 1891-1974) is one of the greatest landscape artists of the Bas Limousin region and one of the founding members of the Société des Beaux-Arts du Bas-Limousin. Apart from that, little is known about this talented Limousin artist, especially recognized between Limoges and Brive; He was the older brother of the famous journalist and writer Robert Margerit (1910-1988), so he mainly painted in Limousin even if there are views of Provence and surely other regions in his work. He was close to the painters Lobel-Riche and Raphaël GASPERI also known for their Limousin and Périgourdin landscapes. Like the latter two, we can admire works by Jean Margerit at the Labenche Museum in Brive, including a view of Limoges: view of Saint-Lazare, in 1935-1938. This canvas is in perfect condition on its original stretcher and in a period frame. Work guaranteed authentic.
