Extremely rare (many known examples, most of which are preserved in the Museum of Valencia but very few pieces for sale) PATERNA or SOCARRAT tile, Spain (South) 14th or 15th century (please check last photo)
This is a ceiling tile, or rather tiles that came to decorate the spaces of the ceilings between 2 beams.
Zoomorphic decoration, as often, the main motif is richly surrounded by volutes and geometric motifs or stylized foliage, illustrating what could be called "the fear of emptiness" and the marked influence of Islamic taste on decorative arts of Southern Europe (period of the Arab conquests of Southern Spain in particular)
The surface of the tile is not smooth and one can guess like an imprint of a seal or stamp in the center, partly covered by the design of the body of the animal.
The chromatic range could not be simpler, in black and red on a background left in light beige brick color, or natural terracotta
Good condition (a slight lack in the upper right corner), any restoration
Dimensions
