Superb and very large ochre glazed earthenware jar from FREJUS (Var, South of France), first half of 17th century.
These transport jars were used to deliver various foodstuffs and liquids such as wine, olives or oil.
The type of hollow seal and their number made it possible to identify the customer to whom the goods belonged (here, the same seal is reproduced 3 times, with a fleur-de-lis and inscriptions that are illegible due to a thick enamel covering them). These jars were closed with skins or leather that their flared rim allowed to be tied.
Dimensions
70 cm height
and 38 cm diameter
Its format is quite unusual compared to those I ve seen on the past, taller and less wide in silhouette.
Exceptional condition, with inside the jar the original "cane" of its manufacture.
No shock, fel, lack or restoration.
Even the lid of the jar, often powdery or fragile, is in perfect condition here, with very aesthetic enamel drips covering the terracotta container.
A simple hole of a few mm had been drilled in the lower part by one of its former owners, allowing the evacuation of water which could stagnate inside and damage it, often ending up freezing in winter and causing damage to the bottom of the jars.
