Charles Valton (1851-1918)
Charles Valton , born on January 26, 1851 in Pau , is a famous French animal sculptor .
From the age of fifteen , he regularly visited the Garden of Plants , where he carefully observed animal anatomy .
Admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Paris , he received instruction from Antoine-Louis Barye and Emmanuel Frémiet , them selves animal sculptors .
CH.Valton exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1868 to 1914 .
He began by exhibiting plaster casts and some waxes , then , from 1880 , almost exclusively small bronze groups .
He was awarded several times , with a third-class medal in 1875 and another second-class in 1885 .
At the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900 , he received two gold medals .
Recognized for his art , he was appointed professor of sculpture at the School of Germain Pilon in Paris in 1883 .
Charles Valton is considered one of the most important representatives of animal sculpture , with a preference for compositions honoring peaceful animals , far from the romantic struggle of the works of other sculptors .
From 1868 to 1914 , Charles Valton produced more than 70 animal models .
Charles Valton died on May 21 , 1918 in Chinon .
